ASHRAE Standard 189.1
Associate Professor, HVACR Program Coordinator
Ferris State University
ASHRAE Standard 189.1
This new ASHRAE standard was developed in coordination with USBGC and IESNA for the purpose of creating a code ready standard that addresses the overall building performance needs in establishing a minimum level of acceptance as to what is a “GREEN” building. ASHRAE Standard 189.1 incorporates ASHRAE Standards 62.1, 55, and 90.1 (all current versions) and the platform of LEED to develop code language explanations for all areas of a Green Building and what the building owner can expect for building performance. The presentation will address the following in reference to ASHRAE 189.1; (a) Why have it?, (b) Relationship to Other ASHRAE Standards, and (c) What is in the Standard. The content of the details of the standard will be covered in a general context (due to time) as it will outline the areas of the standard, show Mandatory elements within each area of the standard, and then illustrate the two paths of compliance (prescriptive and performance) for each area of the standard.
Douglas F. Zentz, Associate Professor, is the Program Coordinator for the HVACR Programs within the College of Engineering Technology at Ferris State University. He received his Bachelor degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology from Purdue University in 1980 and his Master degree in Career and Technical Education from Ferris State University in 2007. He is a past President of West Michigan ASHRAE, a past RVC of Student Activities for Region V, and past Chair for Student Activities within ASHRAE.
In the field of HVACR, his background includes professional engineering sales for the Trane Company, manager of engineering-design-build for W.J. O’Neil Company in Detroit, and vice-president of engineering for EPPA-Strand Custom Air Handling in Detroit. This experience started in 1980 and continued until his transformation into teaching at Ferris State University in 2003.

April 2018 - BAS Success with IoT

BAS Account Manager, Trane - Arkansas

BAS Account Manager, Trane - Arkansas
BAS Success with IoT
As “connected” and “smart” devices become more and more commonplace in our industry, several are left wondering exactly what is, can be, and should be accessed through the internet. Questions concerning how these devices are networked, and how they can be leveraged for the benefit of buildings and their operators also arise as this technology is leveraged. Beyond these questions, valid concerns surrounding data security are also prevalent. This presentation seeks to explore answers to all of these questions and discuss how to better serve buildings, their occupants, and their owners/operators.
David joined Trane, in July of 2017, as a BAS Account Manager as part of the team chosen to startup new offices in Springdale and Little Rock Arkansas. Preceding this he worked for a 3rd party owned franchise office for Trane. He attended the Trane Controls Graduate Training Program in St. Paul, MN, a controls specific offshoot of the renowned “Trane GTP” program, as part of the inaugural class. Throughout all of his time with Trane, David has divided his time between working with engineers and facility owner/operators in control system design based on Trane and Tridium systems, and assisting in the management of the controls fulfillment teams. Prior to his time working as an ATC contractor, David worked for an Arkansas based consulting firm, Bernhard TME, for nearly seven years, first as a student intern while completing his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Arkansas, then continuing on as a Mechanical Designer/Engineer Intern upon graduation. As a proud member of ASHRAE since 2013, David currently serves the Northwest Section of the Arkansas chapter (which is slated to become the first new chapter of ASHRAE in over decade in July 2018) as secretary, and has also been member of the Steering Committee, Student Activities Chair, and has contributed to other committees including Social and YEA.

March 2018 - Net Zero Building Lessons

President, Cyclone Energy Group
Lessons Learned from Designing a Net Zero Energy Building
President, Cyclone Energy Group
Lessons Learned from Designing a Net Zero Energy Building
Walgreens opened the first-ever Net Zero Energy retail store in Evanston, Illinois in 2013. The design was unique and incorporated technology never before used, as well as many other cutting-edge technologies. The highlight is the all-natural CO2-based refrigeration system which consists of a never before designed transcritical heat pump technology that uses a vertical geo-exchange wells. Net-zero was achieved using micro-inverter solar panels and vertical wind turbines for energy generation. The project was designed and built to share the lessons learned, and there is a lot to share from this project. In 2016 it was awarded the prestigious ASHRAE International Technology Award in 2016.
Benjamin Skelton is the founder and president of Cyclone Energy Group, a Chicago-based building performance consulting firm. As a consulting engineer, Skelton specializes in energy efficient and sustainable buildings, and is recognized as an expert in building energy simulation, building commissioning, and retro-commissioning. He has worked on a wide variety of buildings and projects that include ENERGY STAR certification, U.S. Green Building Council LEED certification, and net-zero energy buildings. Benjamin has earned prestigious awards for engineering design including an ASHRAE International Design Competition 1st Place Design Award. He currently sits on the board for the International engineering society ASHRAE.
